What happens when two skeletal friends discover that one of them is slowly sprouting feathers? That’s the starting point for Dead as a Dodo, an internationally acclaimed puppet musical that takes audiences on a visually dazzling journey through the underworld — and it’s coming to El Paso for one day only.
Currently touring in France, Dead as a Dodo will make its first U.S. stop in El Paso. On Saturday, October 11, Wakka Wakka Productions brings its latest creation to the Plaza Theatre, with performances at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.. Known for pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling, Wakka Wakka has been hailed by The New York Times as “ceaselessly inventive” and “told gorgeously.”

Blending lifelike puppetry, original music, projections, and striking design, “Dead as a Dodo” explores themes of friendship, survival, and transformation in ways both heartfelt and humorous. Expect skeleton companions, fantastical creatures, molten landscapes, and surreal moments of rebirth — all unfolding in an 80-minute adventure that will leave audiences of all ages spellbound.
Critics have praised the production as “breathtaking” and “an overall experience that feels like a well-rehearsed symphony.” Beyond its visual spectacle, the story resonates with universal questions: What does it mean to change? To survive? To move from extinction to renewal?
For UTEP students, this is a chance to see world-class puppetry and design up close — an inspiration not only for theater majors, but also for artists, musicians, writers, and anyone curious about bold, boundary-pushing performance. Families will also find it an engaging way to experience live art together, with the show recommended for ages seven and up.
Seats are limited, and with only two performances scheduled, tickets are expected to sell quickly.
