The Student Engagement and Leadership Center and Chicano Studies held the annual “El Grito” ceremony celebrating Mexico’s Independence on Friday, Sept. 14 at the Union Plaza.
Students gathered for a commemoration of the Declaration of Mexican Independence with President Natalicio and Consul General of Mexico in El Paso Marcos Bucio.
Other guests at the ceremony included The Rector of Instituto Tecnologico de Ciudad Juarez Mtro. Hermengildo Lagarda Leyva, The Rector of Universidad Tecnologica of Ciuidad Juarez Lic. Guillermo Alvarez, The Undersecretary for the Northern Region of the State Education Secretariat Lic. Judith Soto.
Mariachi music was present during de celebration of El Grito on September 14 at Union Plaza.

The event counted with the presence of special guests, such as Marco Brucio, consul general of Mexico in El Paso, Guillermo Alvarez, the rector of the Universidad Tecnologica de Ciudad Juarez, Hermengildo Lagarda Leyva, the rector of the Instituto Tecnologico de Ciudad Juarez, and Judith Soto, the State Education Secretariat.
Arturo Barrio, Senior Advisor to the President of UTEP on Mexico and Latin America, introduced the event.
Dr. Diana Natalicio, president of UTEP, said a few words about the relationship between UTEP and Mexico.
Consul General of Mexico in El Paso, Marcos Brucio, celebrated the tradition of El Grito.
