It was a tough afternoon for the UTEP women’s soccer team, as they fell to UT-Rio Grande 3-2 on Sunday at home.

UTRGV scored three goals in the second half—two from Sarah Bonney (54’, 80’) and one from Emily Zapata (77’). UTEP scored their lone two goals in the second half as well, coming from Lauren Crenshaw (60’) and Natalie Valentine (67’). The Miners are currently 2-2-0 overall, while UTRGV improved to 2-2-0.

“We didn’t have our shape on defense when UTRGV would go on the break,” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said in a release. “We made mistakes that we can fix for our next game on Friday.”

UTEP senior goalie Alyssa Palacios had four saves in the second half, yet let three go for the Miners in the end. UTEP led 2-1 up until the 77th minute when Zapata scored. UTRGV’s two unanswered goals capped off the win for them.

The Miners will close out their four-game homestand against Grand Canyon on Friday (7 p.m.) and Northern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 2. (6 p.m.).
