Khalid performed an invite-only show on Friday, March 24 at Americas High School for Spotify Premium members in El Paso.

The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards will be a night to remember for the El Paso local artist Khalid as he received his first Moon Person for “Best New Artist.”

The Americas High School graduate beat Noah Cyrus, Kodak Black, Julia Michaels, SZA and Young M.A. in the category for “Best New Artist.”

During his acceptance speech the 19-year old singer thanked “the city of the 915” for the support he has received throughout his career.

“This is crazy, this is ridiculous,” Khalid said. “I’ve got to thank the city of El Paso for standing behind me, this isn’t just for me; this is for the city.”

Khalid also performed a brief set that included his hits “Location” and “Young, Dumb & Broke” at the VMA’s pre-show.
