For the first time in program history, two Miners, offensive lineman Will Hernandez and running back Aaron Jones, earned AP All-American recognition as announced on Monday, Dec. 12. Hernandez was named to the second team and Jones received third team honors.
It was the first time since Johnny Lee Higgins received an All-American award in 2006 that a player from the Miners has been recognized.
Hernandez started 37 games during his tennure at UTEP. His offensive line efforts ranked UTEP at fourth in C-USA for 185.5 rushing yards per game and the fourth least sacks allowed in C-USA with only 1.83 a contest.
Jones dominated offensively for his junior season at tailback. He finished third in the nation for 147.8 rushing yards per game and rushed for the single-season UTEP record of 1,773 yards. This season Jones also became the program’s leading rusher with 4,114 yards.
