Union gallery showcases ’66 exhibit

January 21, 2016

In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the 1966 men’s basketball national championship, the union gallery will feature an exhibit titled “The Road to Glory.”

Brought by the office of student life, the gallery will run from Jan. 19 through Feb. 26 to commemorate the championship team.

Texas Western is still the only Division I men’s basketball team in the state of Texas to win a national championship. Led by coach Don Haskins, the team featured seven african-american players and started five of them during the national championship.

For the 40th anniversary of the championship, Wheaties cereal box showcased the championship team. The box was signed by coach Haskins as pictured below:

The exhibit will also feature a reception in regards to the display on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 5:00 p.m., followed by a documentary titled, “And the Wheels Turned” at 6:00 p.m. After the documentary, the union cinema will be showing “Glory Road” at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
