“¡Mexicanos!¡Vivan los héroes que nos dieron patria!” exclaimed Jacob Prado, Consul General of Mexico in El Paso, today outside of the Union Building as the University of Texas a El Paso commemorated the 205th anniversary of Mexico’s independence.
UTEP students, faculty and staff gathered today as Prado performed “El Grito” praising the Mexican War of Independence heroes and finishing with three resounding Viva Mexico’s and waving the Mexican flag. Once the ritual culminated those in attendance intoned the Mexican National Anthem.
It is the same ritual the Mexican President will perform later tonight out of a balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City.
Food was available for purchase as mariachis played traditional Mexican songs to continue the celebration.
