UTEP organizations #DemandBetter

Around 20 students representing various organizations around campus came together to demand more awareness for the causes they represent, Thursday at the Templeton Suite on the third floor of Union West.

“We want every student here to actually raise their voice, and fight for their cause,”said President of One Campus Challenge, Hugo Garcia, senior pre-nursing major.

The #DemandBetter event was organized by One Campus Challenge, an organization that fights against preventable diseases and extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. They were joined by the Global Scholars Organization, To Write Love on Her Arms, Texas Freedom Network and the Student Government Association.

“It’s a reminder that we have to constantly be fighting for the things we know about,” said Rosaura Chapina, junior forensic science major and member of Global Scholars Organization, when referring to a video shown by One regarding lack of electricity in sub-Saharan Africa.

Recruitment Coordinator for One Campus Challenge, Sarah Ponce de Leon, sophomore civil engineering major, said the purpose of the event was to unite UTEP organizations and demand more from their political leaders.

As a result, included in the event students wrote letters to Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., in support of the Electrify Africa Act, which would increase access to electricity in sub-Saharan African.

“It’s about I’m saying I have voice and I can make a change,” De Leon said.
