“Les Miserables” premiers at UDT

“Les Miserables” will come to life on the UTEP Dinner Theatre stage for the very first time. The popular three time Tony award musical turned hollywood film, will get it’s very own rendition by our miner theatre department.

“We have waited 28 years to get the rights for this show.  As soon as it was announced that the rights were to be released we got them the same day.  It was a happy coincidence that they were released for UTEP’S Centennial year celebration,” Greg Taylor, Director of the UTEP Dinner Theatre said. “We pride ourselves on doing the best and latest offerings from Broadway so we always knew we would do this show one day.”

Taylor didn’t think that it would take them 28 years to make this a reality, but the wait was worth it.

“I know this is a show that we will do again one day.  We have put a lot of our financial resources in to this show along with a great deal of time and effort.  It will be seen again one day,” Taylor said.

“Les Miserables” is a musical based off of the Novel Les Miserables, by french writer Victor Hugo. The story is a heartfelt one that deals with issues of classism, politics and revolution, taking place in 19th Century France. The musical has increased in popularity after the recent on screen depiction of the musical with Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russel Crowe and other Hollywood A-Listers.

“Les Miserables” is considered to be a classic among musicals, adapted and performed in various countries in numerous languages around the world. Les Mis also holds the record for the longest running musical at London’s West End. With that being said, El Pasoans now have the opportunity to watch this musical performed at the UTEP Dinner Theatre, and to watch a beautifully written masterpiece come to life on stage.

“We were hoping to find a major big show to do during the centennial year and got lucky when “Les Mis” was released.  It timed out well because a a centennial is a major event and a show the size and scope of Les Mis is also a major event.  That the plot of the shows concerns idealistic students was a happy coincidence,” Taylor said.

If people are looking for a large scale heartfelt romantic story told with an amazing physical production you can’t go wrong with our production of Les Miserables,” he said.
