Last night, Obama announced his executive order on immigration, a major news item that was met with mixed responses.

In case you haven’t heard, Obama’s executive order is a BIG DEAL! It provides temporary relief from deportation to an estimated five million undocumented immigrants.

The move by the president has Republicans were quick to say the president should be impeached and equating his actions to that of a dictator. Obama is not the first president to issue executive orders to protect immigrants and have been done in the past by the likes of Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, among others.

Obama’s executive order does not protect everyone, a big group of people left out from protection are the parents of DREAMers, it also does not provide a path to legal status or citizenship. All it does is give temporary relief from deportation.

Not to mention the fact that it will be challenged to death by Republicans.

However, it’s still a step forward toward comprehensive immigration reform and a big win for immigration advocates.

BUT, a big chunk of Americans were left out from having the chance to hear about this major news item last night, after the major TV stations decided not to broadcast the president’s speech, probably due to it’s overtly political nature.

Overtly political nature, what does that even mean?

Yes folks, apparently CBS, FOX, ABC and NBC have come to the realization that political speeches are political and they’re not okay with that.

This is the problem with media conglomeration, when SIX companies own ALL of the media in the U.S; it’s the American audience that ultimately ends up losing. It causes content to be skewed, propagandized and censored. Because when the four major stations decide that they don’t want their audiences to listen to the president’s decision on immigration reform, WE ARE LEFT WITH NOTHING.

Welcome to the 21^st century, where public information is determined by an elite few.

Marcela Garcia, a editor from the Boston Globe, couldn’t have said it more simply; that the move by the major networks “deprived their audience of a major policy event.”

It was a detrimental decision that hurts viewers because it deprived their audiences of being informed citizens. Corporate interests beat the interests of the citizenry. And that’s not even touching on the fact that the Wall Street Journal used the term “illegal immigrant” in their article about the president’s decision, despite the AP making a rule change and declaring people are not illegal, only actions are.

Another clear indication of how media interest and ownership affect the content of news media.

In this highly conglomerated media environment, the interests of those who own the media have ended up trumping the interests of the people to be accurately informed about the world around them.
